The Elder is on the computer playing The Quest on the Cyberchase site from PBSkids.org. This is a very challenging game that he has been playing for over a year now. It amazes me how much he could do without ever asking for help. He has won the game a number of times but continues to play it. Every once in a while he has asked us to spell the passwords for him that he would needed to get into certain secret areas of the game. There were 2. Blubber and Sand. So finally I wrote them on a sticky note and put it by the computer so he would not have to ask anymore. So today I thought, well maybe they updated the game and there was a different password now…
The Elder: Mommy, can you write the word “fish”?
Me: You want me to spell it?
The Elder: Yes, can you spell “fish” for me, please?
Me: Let’s sound it out.
The Elder: But I can’t know how to do it!
Me: That’s why we sound it out. I’ll give you a hint. There are 4 letters. (I draw 4 dashes like we are playing Hangman.) What goes here f-f-f-f-f-f-f
The Elder: I can’t know.
Me: Yes you do. f-f-f-f-f-f-f
The Elder: It’s an F.
Me: Good, What’s the next letter? f-i-i-i-i-i
The Elder: I
Me: Good, what is the last sound? f-i-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh
The Elder: That’s what I can’t know.
Me: Listen carefully. sh-sh-sh-sh.
The Elder: H! It’s an H!
Me: Very close. There is an H in it. (I was all prepared to say the word, “blend” to give him a hint)
The Elder: I can’t know! (to the tune of “just tell me already so I can finish my game.” THEN, it was like a lightbulb went off) An S!!
Me: That’s right! And that is how we sound out words!
The Elder: OK, let’s see if it works.
Elderese has gotten to be so funny, and rapidly increasing the size of its dictionary, that I have added a widget in the sidebar to help me keep up with them without have to write a whole post every single time! Enjoy!
