After you told me this story, there was a simiular incident with the merry-go-round of vehicles and it wasn't obvious what the cause of the meltdown was, but it was something new (to him) that was freaking him out. Maybe I'll post that as an addendum to this post on my site.

Ironically enough, that works for us too. The Child Psych recommended that. I can spell things aloud too and that calms him down long enough to process the word that I'm spelling. Even if it is his name! That's handy when there's no pen and paper around!

BTW, that's a fancy word you used there. Very impressed! :)

I'm working my way backwards to the summer camp post, but think you are right on with your detective work.

One thing that does help to ameliorate the meltdowns for my son, even if he is hungry or tired, is to communicate changes or problems with the schedule in writing. It seems silly but even if we are right next to each other and he is watching me write it down, it makes it a bit easier to take in for him.

What a patient and observant mom you are!!!! Each day offers new lessons for us all to learn--not just about autism or autistic behaviors but about ourselves. Keep up the good work! One of these days "every day" will be easy and then what will we do? As for now, I suppose we will keep dreaming and reaching for it....
