The Child Psych recommended that. I can spell things aloud too and that calms him down long enough to process the word that I'm spelling. Even if it is his name! One thing that does help to ameliorate the meltdowns for my son, even if he is hungry or tired, is to communicate changes or problems with the schedule in writing. It seems silly but even if we are right next to each other and he is watching me write it down, it makes it a bit easier to take in for him. I’m working my way backwards to the summer camp post, but think you are right on with your detective work.
